Riot Games revealed Friday that the League of Legends European Championship summer split will kick off June 17. The split will start two weeks after the Mid-Season Invitational is completed, giving the MSI representative a bit more time off than before.
The LEC summer split will begin with a super week where all teams will play three games each. The summer split will feature Rogue, Fnatic, Misfits Gaming, G2 Esports, Excel, Team Vitality, MAD Lions, SK Gaming, Team BDS and Astralis.
All 10 LEC teams will compete for the summer split title as well as the League of Legends World Championship spots that come with success in the final split of the year.
What to expect in LEC summer split
Just like the previous year, the top six teams in the LEC will advance to playoffs to compete for Worlds spots. MAD Lions, Rogue and Fnatic all booked their tickets to represent Europe last year and will hope to do so again. However, they’ll have to face the reigning spring champions G2 as well as six other teams in the summer split.
While several LEC teams are sticking with their spring split roster, the likes of Astralis and Fnatic have already undergone changes. Astralis bid farewell to all their players except Kasper “Kobbe” Kobberup and Oliver “Dajor” Ryppa.
Meanwhile, MAD let go of Steven “Reeker” Chen for Yasin “Nisqy” Dinçer in the mid lane. With most rosters remaining quite similar for the LEC summer split, the teams to beat remain Rogue, G2 and Fnatic. All three teams ended the spring playoffs in the top three and will look to repeat the same feat in summer. Nonetheless, Vitality will be eager to silence critics after failing to live up to the super team hype in spring.
Additionally, there is still no information on whether the LEC summer split will have a live audience. The spring playoff finals featured a limited number of fans and Riot could continue the trend in the summer.
